The FGCU men's division II hockey team was eliminated from the Nationals following their 3-2 OT loss to NYU.
The Eagles were the reigning national championship, but were unable to defend their title.
Their first game of the tournament was vs. Utah State. FGCU fell behind quickly 2-0, but wound up scoring five unanswered goals to win.
There second game was against Aurora and once again the Eagles found themselves down a goal early. They eventually tied it up on a goal on a power play. The Eagles were once again down by two goals, but were able to tie it and force overtime. Nobody was able to get the winner so the game ended as a tie.
In the final game, FGCU would play vs. NYU, They were the ones who would score first and second to jump out in front 2-0. NYU would get one back early in the third period and eventually tie it on a penalty shot. NYU would go on to win it in OT to eliminate the Eagles.
FGCU wound up finishing the season with a record 20-2-7. Though they weren't able to repeat as champions, they still managed to win 20 games including wins against Cortland and Davenport who are playing in Division I.
The Eagles still are looking to get better and hope in the near future to be able to play Division I permanently in the future. As FGCU athletics continue to grow, it will certainly help out the Hockey team.
