After coming off a playoff appearance in 2016, the Florida Panthers finished off the season with 81 points which had them 14 points shy of the second wild card. Finishing the season with a record of 35-36-11, it was announced that the Florida Panthers will be looking for a new coach. After Tom Rowe replaced Gerard Gallant in November, Rowe went 24-27-10 in the games he was in charge
Gallant was recently named to first head coach of the Las Vegas Golden Knights who will begin their franchise in October of 2017.
Some of the options the Panthers can look for his two-time Stanley cup winning coach, Darryl Sutter, who as recently let go by the Los Angeles Kings. Willie Desjardin from the Vancouver Canucks and Lindy Ruff were the two other coaches that were fired since the season ended.
Despite not making the playoffs, Jonathon Marchessault did score 30 goals for the first time in is career in his first year with the Panthers. Vincent Trocheck led the team with 54 points, as the American forward played in all 82 games in the regular season.
Coming into the season Roberto Luongo was supposed to be the starter for the Panthers, but after the 38 year old was sidelined with an injury, backup goalie James Reimer played in three more games while winning 13 games.
The Panthers will have to wait till July 1st to officially start signing players, but they do have 9 players in their organization that will be unrestricted free agents. The top name on the list is 45 year Jaromir Jagr, who says he wants to play until he is 50.
Thomas Vanek, who was acquired right before the trade deadline, will also be a free agent, so the Panthers will have to deal with 29 other teams trying to get back the two time former 40 goal scorer.
